I don't think it's intended to look like a Christmas tree - though now that you say it, it's kind of obvious. All I saw initially was what it is - the sun shining through the roofbox on Midwinter Morning at Newgrange (a prehistoric passage tomb) in Ireland.
Maybe that's why the picture is such a popular one.
